CEO Carlos Ghosn says Nissan Motor Co. will need to increase local output in North America to meet demand and reach its sales goal of capturing 10% of the U.S. market by 2017.

Ghosn tells reporters at the New York auto show "we obviously need more capacity" in the region, although he did not announce a plan to do so.

Nissan currently has facilities in place to build about 1.9 million cars and trucks in North America. Last year the company's sales in the U.S. grew 11% to 1.39 million Nissan and Infiniti brand vehicles, enough to give it an 8.0% share, according to Autodata Corp.

Nissan's sales through the first three months of 2015 grew 4% to 367,600 units and raised its market share to 9.3%.
