Prosecutors in Japan will indict former Nissan Motor Co. Chairman Carlos Ghosn on new charges next week, sources tell broadcaster NHK.
Ghosn, who was arrested last November, was granted $9 million bail in March. But prosecutors arrested him again on April 4. Under Japanese law, he must be charged or released by April 22.
Filing a new indictment will enable prosecutors to continue to incarcerate Ghosn and limit his access to his attorneys. Japan’s legal system enables prosecutors to detain suspects indefinitely by periodically announcing new charges and indictments.
Ghosn has been preparing for a trial on earlier charges of hiding about 9 billion yen ($82 million) in deferred retirement compensation and temporarily transferring 1.9 billion ($16 million) of personal investment losses to Nissan.
The new charges claim Ghosn transferred millions of dollars of Nissan funds for his personal use.
