Hiroto Saikawa’s days as CEO at Nissan Motor Co. could be numbered as management crises roil the company and its alliance with Renault SA, says the Financial Times.
Critics say Saikawa has mishandled last month’s arrest of former Chairman Carlos Ghosn, who was charged on Dec. 10 with failing to report $43 million in compensation.
Saikawa angrily denounced Ghosn during a press conference hours after an internal investigation at Nissan prompted Ghosn’s arrest. But analysts say the unusual press conference generated resentment and strain with Renault.
Critics say Saikawa should have personally explained the situation to Renault ahead of any legal action. Reports today say he also avoided a one-on-one meeting today with Renault’s leadership during the first of two days of meetings with the alliance board.
The alliance has been under strain for more than a year over Nissan’s desire to gain more influence in the Renault-dominated partnership.
