A district court in Tokyo is expected to rule on Jan. 15 whether to allow Carlos Ghosn to be released on bail following his arrest for alleged financial misbehavior on Nov. 19.
Since then prosecutors have rearrested him on additional charges. Ghosn denies any wrongdoing. Regardless of the judge’s ruling, the other side is expected to appeal, The Nikkei says.
Observers of Japan’s legal system say Ghosn is unlikely to be released until June, when he is expected to go on trial over the initial charges that he failed to report $43 million in deferred compensation. In the meantime, prosecutors can continue to detain him by repeatedly filing new charges.
