Germany may redirect its economic strategy toward Asia if the Trump administration starts a trade war, says Vice Chancellor Sigmar Gabriel.
“We have to prepare for a rough ride,” Gabriel tells German public broadcaster ZDF. His assessment followed what he described as President Trump’s “highly nationalistic” remarks following his swearing-in ceremony on Friday. Trump indicated his trade policies will reflect a strong America-first philosophy.
Gabriel says he takes Trump’s warning “extremely seriously.” He tells ZDF that Germany and the European Union must prepare to defend their economic interests and prevent the spread of trade-inhibiting nationalism.
