Motor Trend has named the Genesis G70 sedan, Jeep Wrangler SUV and Ram 1500 pickup as its vehicles of the year.

In winning Car of the year, the G70 (left) edged out six other finalists: the Audi A6 and A7, Honda Insight, Hyundai Veloster and Volvo S60/V60. Comparing the G70 favorably to the BMW 3 Series, MT’s editors praised the Genesis model for its “punchy powertrains” and “agile chassis.”

The all-new Wrangler (right) bested the Acura RDX, Ford Expedition, Hyundai Kona, Jaguar I-Pace, Lincoln Navigator, Range Rover Velar, Subaru Forester and Volvo XC40 for SUV of the Year.

MT hailed the Jeep as “what crossovers want to be when they grow up.”

The fifth-generation Ram 1500 (left) beat the Chevrolet Silverado, Ford F-150 diesel and GMC Sierra for Truck of the Year honors. Judges declared the 1500 as having the best balance of overall capability, efficiency, quality and value among pickup trucks.

MT evaluated 81 all-new and substantially updated vehicles across the three categories based on engineering excellence, design, fuel efficiency, safety, quality, value and “performance of intended function.” Vehicles were put through their paces on public roads and test tracks.

Former Fiat Chrysler Automobiles NV CEO Sergio Marchionne, who died on July 25 from complications following cancer surgery, was chosen as MT’s Person of the Year. Daimler AG CEO Dieter Zetsche ranked second behind Marchionne on the magazine’s top 50 Power List.
