China’s Zhejiang Geely Automobile Holding Co. has purchased the Utah Motorsports Campus near Salt Lake City for $18.5 million.

The deal, which has been in the works for several years, is said to be the first acquisition of a major, non-private American racing facility by a foreign company.

Geely’s Mitime Utah Investments subsidiary has been managing the facility since 2015 and now will take over full control. The carmaker plans to make unspecified upgrades and expand the complex.

Opened in 2006 as the Miller Motorsports Park, the 511-acre site has hosted events ranging from American Le Mans, Grand-Am Road Racing and Pirelli World Challenge to off-road, motorcycle and go-kart racing. Geely plans to continue to operate the complex in this way rather than turn it into a private test track.

Geely—which owns Lotus, Lynk & Co., Polestar, Proton, Volvo and its own namesake brand—also is building 10 race tracks in China. The company owns and operates the FIA Chinese Formula 4 Championship, and its Lynk unit is preparing to launch an entry in the FIA World Touring Car Championship.
