Prime Minister Edouard Philippe tells RTL radio that the €500 million program will hike scrappage payments to €4,000 ($4,500) for eligible car owners. The government also is expanding aid to low-income families that heat their homes with diesel fuel.
The measures are intended to counter protests over higher government fuel taxes, according to Reuters. The news service says several groups plan to stage demonstrations and roadblocks on Nov. 17.
