The Federation Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA) has approved nine constructor teams under new homologation rules for future seasons of its Formula E electric vehicle race series.
Teams will use a redesigned common battery, chassis and powertrain for three years, starting with the 2018/2019 season. The constructors are ABT Formel E, BMW, DS Automobiles, Jaguar Land Rover, Mahindra Racing, NextEV NIO, Penske Autosport, Renault and Venturi Automobiles.
The announcement confirms BMW’s previously rumored participation. Additional teams can join the series with homologated designs starting in the 2019/2020 season. The circuit’s third season for 2016/2017 started last autumn.
Spark Racing Technology will produce the common chassis and McLaren Applied Technologies will supply the battery. The latter will be significantly more powerful than today’s system, which will eliminate the need to swap out Formula E vehicles midway through a race.
