Former Scion Models Rebadged as Toyotas

Toyota Motor Corp. is renaming three models for the 2017 model year that had been sold in the U.S. under its former Scion brand.
Two of the models will keep part of their names as rebadged Toyotas: The Scion iM hatchback will be known as the Corolla iM, and the Mazda-built Scion iA sub-compact sedan will become the Yaris iA. This allows Toyota to position the former Scion models as new body styles for the current Corolla and Yaris, rather than having to market them under entirely new names.
The Scion FR-S sports coupe will live on as the Toyota 86. That name already is used in overseas markets. The production version of the CH-R concept crossover vehicle will maintain its name as part of Toyota’s lineup.
In addition to its new moniker, the Toyota 86 coupe—named after the 1980s-era AE86 drift car—also gets a mild makeover. Changes include new bumpers, a 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine and performance upgrades to the car’s suspension.
Last month Toyota announced plans to discontinue the 13-year-old Scion brand. At that time, the carmaker said it would drop the slow-selling tC sports coupe in August and fold the remaining models into its main Toyota brand.
