Longtime General Motors Co. executive Bob Burger died late last month at the age of 93.

Burger, who spent his entire career at GM, led the company’s Chevrolet brand from 1984 until his retirement in 1989. Known as a fierce dealer advocate, Burger implemented Chevy’s "Heartbeat of America" advertising campaign to jumpstart sales following the recession in the early 1980s.

Burger began working full time at GM in 1949 after graduating as an industrial engineer from General Motors Institute (now Kettering University). After stints at Oldsmobile and Buick, Burger served as a corporate marketing vice president and briefly headed the carmaker’s Cadillac unit before moving to Chevy.
