Ford Motor Co. is poised to introduce a feature on the 2016 F-150 pickup truck that helps drivers maneuver a trailer when backing up.

Dubbed Pro Trailer Backup Assist, the system lets drivers steer with a dash-mounted knob instead of the steering wheel. Drivers simply shift into reverse and turn the knob in the direction they want the trailer to go.

Drivers can use the truck's rearview mirrors or a backup camera to monitor the process. Vehicle speed is automatically limited to maintain control.

Ford developed the system, which it describes as a segment-first, over the last 10 years. The feature combines camera and electric steering technologies, five of which the company has patented so far.
