Ford Motor Co. says it will expand a previous recall of Ranger compact pickups to include all 391,400 of the trucks built in North America during the 2004-2006 model years.
The campaign will replace Takata Corp. driver-side airbag inflators that could explode when triggered by a crash and spray metal shrapnel into the passenger compartment. Ford says more than 90% of affected trucks are located in the U.S. and its federalized territories.
The new recall is part of a broader callback announced last week by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration that covers about 5 million vehicles made by eight carmakers. NHTSA’s action was prompted by a 10th fatality involving a 2006 model Ranger that crashed in South Carolina last month.
The Takata inflators appear to be compromised by lengthy exposure to hot and humid conditions. But carmakers have begun recalling cars and trucks that contain the supplier’s devices regardless of where the vehicles are located.
