Ford Motor Co. is preparing to recall 2013 Escape crossovers and Fusion sedans because of an engine overheating problem that has caused a dozen fires.
The campaign will involve only SE and SEL trim level vehicles equipped with a turbocharged 1.6-liter engine. Ford says the initiative will cover about 73,000 Escapes and 15,800 Fusions in the U.S. and Canada.
The recall is the third in four months to fix a fire hazard for the 1.6-liter-powered 2013 Escape. The earlier campaigns involved fuel and coolant leaks.
Ford, which has not described the defect in detail, says some owners have reported a high-temperature warning on the instrument panel before an engine fire started. No injuries have been reported, according to the company.
Ford has not finalized a repair procedure or indicated when the recall will begin. In the meantime, it urges owners of affected vehicles to contact their dealers and arrange for a free loaner vehicle.
