Ford Motor Co. plans to boost the performance of its 2013 model hybrid vehicles by updating several of their operating systems.
The recalibrations, which U.S. dealers will perform at no cost to owners beginning in August, cover about 77,000 hybrid versions of the company's Lincoln MKZ sedan, Ford C-Max people mover and Ford Fusion sedan.
Modifications including the ability to drive as fast as 85 mph in electric mode (compared with 62 mph now) are intended to make it more likely that customers can actually achieve the 47 mpg average fuel economy Ford has been touting in ads for the cars.
Other updates will reduce energy demands of the heater and air-conditioning systems, selectively trim the speed of the engine's electric cooling fan, shorten engine warm-up time by as much as 50% and expand the use of aerodynamic grille shutters.
