Ford Motor Co. plans to introduce an all-new midsize SUV in China early next year.
The vehicle, dubbed the Territory, is part of the first wave of 50 models Ford plans to launch in China by 2025 as it struggles to keep pace with rivals in the fast-growing market. Ford’s sales plunged 25% there through the first six months of the year, due in part to its aging vehicle lineup.
Ford will position the midsize Territory between its EcoSport and Kuga SUV/crossovers. The company, which developed the new vehicle with its Jiangling Motors Corp. joint venture partner, expects the Territory will appeal to entry-level customers outside China’s largest cities.
In addition to a stand-alone combustion engine, Ford is planning 48-volt mild hybrid and plug-in hybrid variants. Other goodies include Ford’s Co-Pilot360 driver-assistance package and an infotainment system with Mandarin voice command.
