Ford Motor Co. is preparing to launch sales of right-hand-drive Mustang sport coupes in India this spring.
The car, expected to be priced at about 5 million rupees ($73,300), will be offered through select dealers. All models will come equipped with Ford’s 420-hp, 5.0-liter V-8 and boast a top speed of 250 kph (150 mph).
Ford considers the Mustang a small-volume “halo” car in India that will help build its image. Last year the company’s sales in India rose 1% to 77,700 units. Ford also exported 99,000 vehicles assembled at its factory in Chennai.
The Chennai plant currently assembles Figo mini-hatches, Fiesta small sedans, Ford Classic compact sedans, EcoSport small crossovers and Endeavour premium SUVs, according to Ford’s Web site.
Ford, which introduced the Mustang in 1964, began building right-hand-drive versions for the first time in 2014. The cars are produced along with left-hand-drive models at Ford’s Flat Rock assembly plant southwest of Detroit.
