Ford Motor Co. is preparing to ship as many as 40,000 crossover/SUVs per year from North America to China roughly twice its current exports to the country from anywhere, The Detroit News reports.

Seattle, Wash.-based Auto Warehousing Co., tells the newspaper that shipments are likely to begin in a few weeks. The firm, which processes more than 3 million vehicles annually for 14 carmakers, says the Canadian-built Edge crossovers and U.S.-made Explorer SUVs will embark from Portland, Ore.

The two models will join Chinese-made versions of Ford's EcoSport mini-SUV and Kuga small SUV (the Escape in the U.S. market). Ford says it intends to add 15 models in the market by 2015.

Ford sales in China are growing rapidly. But the company's volume there is only about one-third that of rival General Motors Co.
