Ford Motor Co. has released darkened images of the rear of the Mustang-inspired electric crossover vehicle the company plans to launch in 2020.
The rendering indicates the all-new model will have a muscular stance with a short rear and coupe-like roofline. Mustang-derived design cues include wide haunches and three-bar taillights.
Camouflaged test mules spotted earlier this year showed the vehicle also will feature the Mustang’s steeply raked windshield and front-end treatment.
Ford says the new crossover will blend the performance characteristics of a pony car with the utility of an SUV. General Motors Co. is taking a similar approach with the 2019 Chevrolet Blazer SUV, which borrows cues from the sporty Camaro muscle car.
Ford’s crossover is being developed by the company’s Team Edison created last October to speed the introduction of electrified vehicles. The Detroit-based team is led by Darren Palmer, who previously headed the development of the new Mustang.
