Ford Motor Co. surprised journalists at the Detroit auto show on Monday by unveiling a completely redesigned version of the GT supercar it discontinued nine years ago.

The mid-engine car will go into production late next year, 50 years after the original Ford GT40 swept the first three positions at the 24 Hours of Le Mans race in 1966. Ford says it will offer the model in unspecified select global markets.

Ford hasn't yet released pricing, production levels or detailed specifications for the two seater. But it promises one of the best power-to-weight ratios of any production vehicle. The car has aluminum front and rear subframes and carbon-fiber-reinforced body panels and passenger cell.

The GT will be powered by a twin-turbocharged, 3.5-liter V-6 that produces more than 600 hp, making it Ford's most powerful EcoBoost engine ever. Ford describes the powerplant as a street version of the engine used in Ford's IMSA race cars. Engine highlights include an all-new combined port and direct fuel injection system and a low-friction roller-finger-follower valvetrain. Output will be delivered to the rear wheels through a 7-speed dual-clutch transaxle.

The GT is fitted with 20-inch wheels and Michelin Pilot Super Sport Cup 2 tires compounded specifically for the car.

Dramatically aerodynamic bodywork features a distinctive teardrop-shaped passenger compartment with wide wind channels inboard of the rear wheels. An active rear spoiler deploys and adjusts its height and angle according to vehicle speed and steering input.

Occupants gain access to the car through front-hinged, upward-swinging doors. The seats are fixed to the floor; pedals and steering wheel offer a wide range of adjustment. All necessary driver controls, including turn signals, are built into the steering wheel. The digital instrument panel can be configured to suit multiple driving modes.
