Ford Motor Co. says the second generation of its twin-turbo 3.5-liter EcoBoost V-6 engine will generate 375 hp and 470 lb-ft of torque in the 2017 F-150 pickup truck. This compares with 365 hp and 450 lb-ft for the current F-150’s 3.5-liter Ecoboost unit.

The new torque output will be the highest for any light-duty pickup engine, including diesels and V-8s, according to Ford. In the F-150, the engine will be paired with the 10-speed automatic transmission Ford co-developed with General Motors Co.

The all-new engine promises greater acceleration and more low-end and peak torque performance. It features new turbochargers, including lighter turbine wheels and electrically actuated wastegates with 16 psi of boost versus the 14.5 psi for its predecessor.

The engine gets new pistons to help increase its compression from 10:1 to 10.5:1. A combination of port and direct fuel injection reduces emissions, especially during cold starts.

The 2017 F-150 with the new EcoBoost V-6 will go on sale this autumn. The engine also will be offered in the F-150 SVT Raptor.
