Ford Motor Co. is working with Microsoft Corp. on an array of cloud-based services for cars, including the ability to download new features or wirelessly update operating software.
Such services will be delivered by Microsofts's Azure cloud platform through Ford's new Service Delivery Network. Updates will be downloaded to the vehicle and installed automatically after the owner grants permission.
Microsoft developed the first two versions of Ford's glitch-plagued Sync infotainment system. Ford turned to a rival operating system, BlackBerry Ltd.'s QNX platform, for the Sync 3 system being rolled out later this year.
Ford says Azure will enable it to collect more data with customers' permission about how its cars are used. The network could diagnose problems wirelessly or advise owners when maintenance is needed. The same system also is expected to enable Ford to integrate its vehicles with a wide range of mobile services.
