Ford Motor Co. is calling back 73,400 Transit vans in the U.S. and Canada that were equipped with a flawed trailer tow module that could trigger a multitude of electrical issues.
Water could leak into the modules in 2015-2017 models and corrode the electronics inside. Depending on the extent, the damage could make the turn signals flash rapidly, knock out power to the instrument panel, disable the heating and air-conditioning controls, incapacitate the infotainment system and/or trigger the seatbelt pretensioners.
Ford says the defect also could generate a burning smell or cause a fire, even when the vehicle’s ignition is turned off.
Owners of affected vehicles are advised to park them outside until repairs are made. Customers also have the option of having their dealers disable the module pending a permanent fix.
