Ford Motor Co. is recalling 65,000 of its 2014-2015 model Fusion midsize sedans to fix a software glitch that allows the ignition key to be removed 30 minutes after the engine is switched off with the transmission still in gear.

Ford blames the problem on a programming flaw in the instrument cluster. Federal safety rules require ignition switches to prevent the key from being removed unless the transmission is in Park. The standard is intended to enhance theft protection and prevent parked cars from rolling away.

Affected Fusion models, which include hybrid and Energi variants, were made at Ford assembly plants in Flat Rock, Mich., and Hermosillo, Mexico. Dealers will reprogram the IP control module.
