Ford Motor Co. is recalling 10,500 of its 2013 Escape crossover vehicles in North America to remove carpet padding that could interfere with brake pedal operation.

The campaign involves about 8,300 vehicles in the U.S., 2,000 in Canada and a few hundred in Mexico.

The problem involves misapplied carpet padding in the driver's footwell. Ford says unintended padding between the central console and accelerator pedal could cause the driver's foot to hit the side of the brake pedal instead of the pedal's face when shifting from the accelerator to the brake pedal.

Ford reports no accidents related to the defect. The company's dealers will remove the carpet padding on the driver's side of the console and install a new console trim panel.
