Next week Ford Motor Co. will begin recalling 10,500 of its 2013 Escape crossover vehicles in North America to reconfigure carpet padding and trim that could interfere with brake pedal operation.

The campaign involves about 8,300 vehicles in the U.S., 2,000 in Canada and a few hundred in Mexico. All units were produced at Ford's assembly plant in Louisville, Ky., between March 8 and June 7.

The problem involves improperly positioned carpet padding on the side of the center console between the console and accelerator pedal. The padding could cause the driver's foot to hit the side of the brake pedal instead of the pedal's face when moving from the accelerator to the brake pedal.

Ford reports no accidents related to the defect. The company's dealers will remove the carpet padding on the driver's side of the console and install a new console trim panel.
