Ford Motor Co. is recalling 5,800 of its 2012 Edge crossover vehicles to replace a component in the high-pressure fuel system that could leak and cause an engine fire.
The campaign, expected to begin next week, includes 350 vehicles in Canada. Affected models are equipped with a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine and produced from September 2010 through October 2011.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says the recall was prompted by a defective fuel line pulse damper housing. The device is intended to absorb pulses in gasoline pressure in the fuel rail on its way to the engine's fuel injectors. If the housing develops fatigue cracks and leaks, drivers could notice a fuel odor or dripping gasoline.
Ford says the halves of the housing were assembled by their supplier using a non-approved manual process that could prevent the pieces from being properly brazed. The company reports 11 warranty claims involving fuel leakage from the housing.
The campaign is Ford's third recall in three months involving potential fire threats. The company recalled 11,500 Escape crossovers in July to fix a defective fuel line and another 7,500 Escapes earlier this month to replace an improperly installed engine block plug. Both of those campaigns involve 1.6-liter engines.
