Ford Motor Co. is recalling about 58,000 vehicles in North America with a defect that could deform the fuel tank and interfere with engine performance.

The campaign involves 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engines in 2013-2014 Focus ST five-door hatches (pictured) and 2012-2017 Focus small sedans. The same cars were part of a recall last autumn covering nearly 1.5 million vehicles, but this batch did not receive the proper software update at the time.
The defect can jam the fuel system’s canister purge valve, which helps prevent fuel fumes from escaping into the atmosphere. If the valve sticks in the open position, excessive vacuum can build up and deform the car’s plastic fuel tank.
The resulting condition could cause irregular and/or inaccurate fuel gauge readings, drivability issues or diminished engine power. Dealers will reprogram the powertrain control module, which operates the valve. They also may replace the canister fuel tank and other components.
