Ford Motor Co. is recalling 549,100 small cars and SUVs in North America to fix a flaw that could put the transmission in a gear other than the one intended by the driver.
The fault is a bushing that attaches the shift cable to the transmission. Ford says the part could come loose. If so, the gear selected by the driver may not be the one activated by the cable. When shifting into Park, for example, the transmission could remain in gear, thereby allowing the unattended vehicle to roll away.
Dealers will replace the bushing. In any case, Ford advises operators to always use the parking brake when exiting their vehicles.
