Ford Motor Co. is launching two recalls in the U.S. to fix oil and fuel leaks in 150,000 2013 Escape crossovers equipped with 1.6-liter 4-cylinder engines.
The company will recall another 23,300 Escapes sold in Canada and elsewhere to fix the same problems.
The larger U.S. campaign involves nearly 140,000 Escapes produced between October 2011 and June 2013. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says the engine cylinder head can overheat and crack, causing oil leaks. If oil drips onto a hot engine surface, a fire could result.
NHTSA reports 13 fires linked to the flaw. Ford dealers will modify the engine shielding, cooling and control systems to correct the problem.
The second U.S. recall involves 9,500 Escapes, some of which also are part of the oil leak recall. NHTSA says the vehicles have improperly installed fuel lines that could chafe, leak and cause a fire. The affected vehicles were built between October 2011 and July 2012.
