Ford Motor Co. is calling back 1.5 million small cars in North America to fix a fuel system flaw that could cause the fuel tank to collapse.
The recall targets 2012-2018 of the company’s Ford Focus compact sedans (pictured) and hatchbacks. All models are equipped with 2.0-liter, “GDI” or “GTDI” 4-cylinder engines.
Ford says the system that captures fuel vapors has a malfunctioning valve that normally opens periodically to purge fumes collected in the canister. If the vale sticks open, too much vacuum can build up in the vapor recovery system.
The condition could deform the car’s plastic fuel tank and interfere with the accuracy of the fuel gauge. If so, the engine could stall or be unable to restart.
Dealers will reprogram the system’s control software to prevent too much vacuum from building up. Until customers can have their vehicle repaired, Ford recommends they maintain at least half a tank of fuel at all times.
