Ford Motor Co. is recalling about 202,000 vehicles in Canada and the U.S. to fix a problem that could cause the transmission to suddenly shift into first gear.

Targeted vehicles include 2011-2012 model F-150 fullsize pickup trucks and 2012 model Mustang sport coupes and Ford Expedition and Lincoln large SUVs.

Ford says a speed sensor could send the wrong message to the electronic transmission control module, prompting the controller to downshift unexpectedly. Depending upon vehicle speed, such a gear change could lock up the rear wheels and cause the vehicle to skid. The company reports three accidents but no injuries attributed to the problem.

Dealers will reprogram the powertrain control module software and may replace other components, according to the company.
