Ford Motor Co. is recalling 451,900 of its 2010-2011 model Ford Fusion and Mercury Milan midsize sedans because their fuel tanks could crack and leak.

A misbehaving valve in the fuel vapor recovery system could cause pressure changes inside the tank. Repeated cycling may crack the top of the plastic tank.

Ford says more than 90% of the vehicles were sold in the U.S. The others are in Canada (33,600 units) and Mexico (7,100). Dealers will inspect the system, update the powertrain control module software and replace parts as necessary.
