Ford Motor Co.'s next-generation Mustang sport coupe will abandon the iconic car's nearly 50-year-old design cues and adopt an entirely new look, according to The Wall Street Journal.

The new model, which is expected in 2014, will closely resemble the Evos concept car Ford unveiled at the Frankfurt auto show last year, sources tell the newspaper.

Mustang sales peaked at an astonishing 607,600 units in 1966 the car's second full year of production. But demand last year totaled only 70,400 units. The Journal opines that the radical redesign of the car is meant in part as a bid to appeal to younger buyers.

The new model will retain the Mustang's long hood, round headlamps and large grille but more closely resemble an Aston Martin in the rear, according to the newspaper's sources.
