Ford Motor Co. predicts at least 900 of its 2,700 dealers in the U.S. will be certified to sell and service the company's plug-in hybrid and electric cars by spring.
Ford launched the certification program early last year and originally aimed to sign 350 dealers by now. The first batch of 67 dealers was certified in California, New Jersey and New York.
To gain certification, a Ford dealer must install special signage and displays, offer at least two charging stations, train at least 80% of its sales and service staff on electrified powertrains and keep at least one Focus Electric and C-Max Energi plug-in MPV available for demonstration drives.
Ford has sold about 700 Focus EVs and 2,700 C-Max Energy models since their debuts in late 2011 and last October, respectively, according to The Detroit News.
