Both companies say the wider coverage was specified by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Their campaigns expand initial coverage from two states and two U.S. territories to all or part of seven states and five territories.

Chrysler, which announced an identical territorial expansion on Wednesday for 2003 model Ram pickups, was criticized on Thursday by NHTSA for not broadening its recall enough.

Ford's recall covers about 98,000 of its 2004-2005 Ranger small pickup trucks and 2005-2005 Ford GT supercars.

The expanded Mazda recall covers 86,800 of the company's 2003-2007 Mazda6 sedans and 2006-2007 Mazdaspeed6 variants, 2004-2008 RX-8 sports cars, 2004-2005 MPV vans and 2004- B-Series pickup trucks.
