Ford Motor Co. is replacing the 3-door Ka city car in Europe with a 5-door model adapted from its India-built Figo car.
Dubbed the Ka+, the 2017-model rides on Ford’s global small car platform that also carries the European Fiesta. The new model shares no components with the outgoing Ka, which Ford co-developed with Fiat.
The new Ka+ hatchback is about an inch shorter and two inches taller than the Fiesta. Ford says the layout is best-in-class in both front headroom and rear-seat legroom. The interior also features 21 storage bins, including a small compartment built into the side of the dashboard that's accessible only when the driver's door is open.
The European Ka+ rides a little lower than the Figo, which is sold in India, Mexico and South America. Ford says ride and handling characteristics also have been adapted for Europe with a re-engineered front subframe and engine mounts, specially tuned suspension, modified steering and Europe-specific tires.
Power is provided by Ford’s 1.2-liter Duratec 4-cylinder engine, which will be available in 70- and 85-hp variants. The engine is mated with a 5-speed manual transmission.
Ford says the car’s 47 mpg European fuel efficiency rating benefits from a recalibrated engine, low-friction engine oil and regenerative braking. Other fuel-saving enhancements include the use of low-rolling-resistance tires and improved aerodynamics.
Due to launch this summer throughout Europe, the Ka+ will carry a €10,000 ($11,500) base price in Germany. It will compete against the Kia Rio and Dacia Sandero, according to Ford. There are no plans to offer the vehicle in the U.S.
