Ford Motor Co. has hired 400 additional hourly workers at its factory in Oakville Ont., to make Edge crossovers for export to Europe and China.

Last year Ford said it would add 1,000 workers at the plant to make the 2015 Edge, which will go on sale in North America this spring. The all-new model was engineered specifically for global distribution with diesel and right-hand-drive variants.

Ford, aided by funding from the Ontario and Canadian governments, spent about US$560 million to upgrade the Oakville plant for the car. Refinements include additional robots for production and assembly work.
