In a few weeks Ford Motor Co. will begin shipping as many as 40,000 crossover/SUVs per year from North America to China, The Detroit News reports.
The volume is roughly twice the combined number of vehicles Ford currently imports to China from all countries.
Ford says it began shipping modest numbers of American-made Explorers and Canadian-produced Edge crossovers to China earlier this year. The company also makes the EcoSport mini-SUV and Kuga (Escape) small SUV in China for sale there.
Ford sales in China are growing rapidly. But the company's volume there is only about one-third that of rival General Motors Co.
