Ford Motor Co. says it will double the production run of the new GT supercar to four years.
Production of the $400,000-plus sports coupe is due to start this autumn with annual volumes limited to 250 vehicles for the first two years. The carmaker received more than 6,000 applications for the initial 500 GTs.
Ford hasn’t said how many GTs it plans to make in the extra two years. The goal, according to company officials, is to keep the nameplate “exclusive” while satisfying the “most loyal Ford ambassadors.”
The third year of production is earmarked for people who were wait-listed in the initial process. The fourth year will be open to anyone. New and updated applications will be accepted starting in early 2018.
Earlier this summer Ford announced it will field racecar versions of the GT in IMSA and World Endurance Championship events for four years. The GT won its class in this year’s 24 Hours of Le Mans endurance race, which marked the 50th anniversary of Ford’s historic 1-2-3 finish at the event with the original GT.
About 70% of the buyers of the first 500 new models were previous GT owners. Ford will build the vehicles in Markham, Ont., in conjunction with Canada’s Multimatic Motorsports.
