Ford Motor Co. will spend $2.5 billion in Mexico to build an engine plant in Chihuahua and a transmission plant in Guanajuato.
Both facilities will supply markets in North and South America, Europe and Asia Pacific.
Ford will invest $1.1 billion to add capacity to build a new 4-cylinder gasoline engine at its existing enginemaking factory in Chihuahua. The complex currently makes 4-cylinder Duratec gasoline engines and 4.4-liter and 6.7-liter Scorpion V-8 diesels.
The company plans to spend another $200 million to expand capacity for Chihuahua's current engine lineup. The two projects will generate 1,800 new jobs, more than doubling current employment there.
In Guanajuato, Ford will invest $1.2 billion to erect a new transmission plant within a site operated by longtime supplier Getrag International GmbH. The additional capacity will employ 2,000 workers to make two types of all-new automatic transmissions.
