Ford Debuts Hot-Rod Focus RS

Ford Motor Co. says a new all-wheel-drive system will help maximize the high-performance handling of its upcoming Focus RS sport sedan.

Ford promises the third-generation RS, equipped with a 2.3-liter Ecoboost engine modified to produce more than 315 hp, will handily outperform predecessor models introduced by the company in 2002 and 2009.

The so-called hot hatch will be produced in Germany. It will hit the American market early next year.

Engine modifications include a twin-scroll turbocharger with enlarged intercooler, a less restrictive intake system, large-bore exhaust, stronger cast-iron cylinder liners and a revised cylinder head with a beefier head gasket. The car will be offered only with a 6-speed manual gearbox.

The car's awd system, which was developed with GKN plc, features a multi-plate clutch that can direct as much as 70% of engine torque to the rear axle. A torque-vectoring rear differential channels as much as 100% of available torque to the wheel with more grip.

The system links to the front axle's electronic stability control system, applying braking to the wheel with less traction. The result is more than 1G of lateral acceleration and handling that is superior to standard awd systems, according to Ford.

Other special features include a high-mounted rear spoiler, large diffuser and other aerodynamic enhancements, Recaro seats, additional instrumentation and revised spring rates, bushings and anti-roll bars.

The car will ride on specially developed Michelin 235/35-R19 tires. Pilot Sport Cup 2 tires are optional.
