Ford Motor Co. is adding a North American version of its European-born Fiesta ST hot hatch. The company unveiled the 2014 model earlier today at the Los Angeles auto show.

The Fiesta ST debuted in Europe as a high-performance subcompact seven years ago. The new American version is equipped with a modified 1.6-liter EcoBoost engine that makes 197 hp and 214 lb-ft of torque. Ford expects the car to earn a U.S. highway fuel economy rating of about 34 mpg.

Other special features of the hot-rod five-door include custom grille, chin spoiler, rear diffuser, high-mount rear spoiler and 17-inch wheels. The car sits about 0.6 inches lower than a standard Fiesta and is equipped with quicker 13.6:1 steering and a rear anti-sway bar.

Ford says the Fiesta ST is fitted with a mechanical system that deliberately feeds engine noise into the passenger compartment, thus providing an "enhanced soundtrack" for the driver at highway speeds.
