Ford Motor Co. is developing an all-new compact pickup truck, Jim Farley, who heads the carmaker’s global markets, tells an industry event in Detroit.

Farley offers no timetable or details for the entry-level model, which will be positioned below the 2020 Ranger being introduced this year.

The announcement follows several reports last year that indicated a compact pickup was in the works. Automobile suggested the new model would ride on Ford’s next-generation Focus small car platform and could be introduced in global markets by early next decade.

Ford sold the Courier (pictured), a Fiesta-based subcompact pickup, in Brazil until 2013.

The company also marketed a rebadged Mazda B-Series small pickup truck under the Courier name in the U.S. in the 1970s. That model was replaced by the first-generation Ranger in 1982. Ford applied for a new trademark for the Courier name in the U.S. last year.
