Friday Ford Motor Co. officially launched production of its aluminum-intensive F-150 pickup truck at a second plant: its factory in Kansas City, Mo.

The facility has undergone 13 weeks of retooling, including a new body shop, 500 new robots, and updated paint shop and a rough-road test course.

Like its sister plant in Dearborn, Mich., the Kansas complex will build all models and cab configurations of the F-150. In addition, it will produce trucks with 8-foot cargo boxes and heavy-duty payload packages for commercial fleet customers.

Ford notes that in January the redesigned F-150 tallied its strongest sales month since 2004.
