Subaru is recalling 48,500 of its 2014-2017 model Legacy midsize cars and Outback crossover vehicles to check for incorrectly built steering columns that could fail, leaving the driver with no ability to steer.
The U.S. callback targets vehicles produced this year as recently as May 5. Subaru has ordered dealers not to sell affected models until they can be inspected. Steering columns will be replaced if necessary.
Subaru says affected cars should not be driven until repairs are made. Government documentation about the recall does not indicate when customers will be notified. No injuries have been reported.
