Fiat Chrysler Automobiles NV is launching two global recalls to repair sources of fires in 907,000 vehicles worldwide.
The larger callback targets 470,000 of the company's 2011-2014 Chrysler 300 sedans, Dodge Challenger and Charger cars, Dodge Durango SUVs and Jeep Grand Cherokee SUVs.
All affected vehicles are equipped with a 3.6-liter V-6 engine. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says the engine's 160-amp alternator could suddenly fail, possibly causing the engine to stall and/or starting a fire. FCA is still developing a repair for the problem and won't send out recall notices until the end of November.
The second recall will repair a problem that could short out an electrical connector for the heated exterior mirrors in 437,000 Jeep Wrangler SUVs made during the 2011-2013 model years. FCA dealers will rewire the mirror power feed and install a water shield when the recall begins in December.
