Honda Motor Co. plans to recall 573,100 of its 2003-2007 Accord cars in the U.S. to replace power steering hoses that could leak and cause a fire. All affected models are equipped with V-6 engines.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says the cars have hoses that could crack after prolonged exposure to high underhood temperatures. Smoke and/or fire could occur if power steering fluid drips onto the hot catalytic converter.
Honda says it intends to install hoses made of a more heat-resistant rubber but won't have enough inventory to begin the campaign until early next year. If customers experience a problem before then, the company will replace the hose with one made of the current material, then substitute the sturdier version next year.
The campaign expands a Honda recall in May involving 52,600 of its 2007-2008 Acura TL base and Type S sedans. Honda says it is aware of one fire caused by the defect.
