Next week General Motors Co. will begin recalling 370,000 of its 2014 model Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra large pickup trucks to reprogram software that could cause a fire.
The campaign covers 303,000 trucks in the U.S. and 67,000 vehicles in Canada. All affected models are equipped with a 4.3- or 5.3-liter V-8 engine.
GM has confirmed eight fires but reports no injuries related to the problem. It says all incidents occurred under extremely cold weather conditions. The software glitch appears to relate to control of the engine fuel mixture. The problem could cause the exhaust system to overheat, thus causing a fire in the engine compartment, according to the company.
GM is urging owners not to allow their trucks to idle unattended until the 20-minute upgrade can be performed.
