Fire Hazard Prompts GM to Recall 413,400 Chevy Cruze Cars

Next month General Motors Inc. will begin recalling 413,400 of its 2011-2012 model Chevrolet Cruze sedans to fix a design flaw that can allow engine oil or hydraulic fluid to accumulate near the engine and cause a fire.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says the problem can occur if the car's oil is improperly changed. If so, spilled oil could collect on a plastic shield under the engine and be ignited by the hot engine or exhaust system.
NHTSA says the engine shield also could catch fire on models with manual transmissions if the car is driven after the clutch has completely worn out. Under those conditions, hydraulic fluid could vent from the clutch housing and be ignited by the engine or exhaust system.
All affected cars were assembled between the beginning of October 2009 and the end of May 2012 at GM's plant in Lordstown, Ohio. NHTSA says Chevrolet dealers will modify the shield. Cars with manual transmissions also will receive protective tape on the power steering wire harness.
NHTSA launched an investigation of the Cruze in April after two owners reported fires that destroyed their cars. GM says it has received 30 reports of fires but is aware of no related accidents or injuries.
